The issue represents a broad selection of works ranging from mathematics and physics to computer science, helping us understand our environment, develop and protect it, as well as look beyond it.
To illustrate this, I describe but a few of excellent results contained in this issue.
An example of understanding our environment is beautifully exemplified by the paper “Statistical physics approach to earthquake occurrence and forecasting” by Lucilla de Arcangelis et al.
From being considered an expression of Poseidon’s wrath - to the theory that they are an effect of earth floating on rough waters - understanding and, more practically, predicting earthquakes has long held the interest of humanity.
This paper builds on a statistical mechanics approach to earthquake occurrence and develops it to improve seismic forecasting.
